What Is a Dental Deep Cleaning and Do You Need One?
This is a subtitle for your new post
Hearing your dentist recommend a deep cleaning can be a little intimidating—but there’s no need to panic.
At SolSmile Lounge in Tampa, we often recommend deep cleanings (also called scaling and root planing) to help patients reverse early signs of gum disease and protect their overall oral health. It’s not scary—it’s preventive.
🦷 What Is a Dental Deep Cleaning?
Unlike a regular cleaning, which focuses on removing plaque and tartar above the gumline, a deep cleaning targets the spaces below the gums, where harmful bacteria can hide and cause infection.
Deep cleanings involve two main steps:
- Scaling – Removes plaque and tartar buildup from below the gumline.
- Root Planing – Smooths the root surfaces so gums can reattach to teeth more easily and bacteria has fewer places to cling.
This treatment is often done over two visits, depending on the extent of buildup or inflammation.
🔍 Why Would I Need One?
If you’re showing signs of gingivitis or early periodontal disease, your dentist may recommend a deep cleaning to prevent things from progressing. You might need one if:
- Your gums bleed when brushing or flossing
- You have persistent bad breath
- Your gums are red, swollen, or tender
- Teeth feel loose or are shifting
- Your dental exam shows deep periodontal pockets (spaces between your teeth and gums)
These are common—and treatable—signs of gum issues. The goal is to stop gum disease before it becomes irreversible.
🪥 Is It Painful?
Not at SolSmile Lounge. We use gentle techniques and can apply a local anesthetic so you stay comfortable during your cleaning. Afterward, some sensitivity is normal, but most patients feel much better knowing they’re getting their oral health back on track.
🧼 What Happens After the Procedure?
- We’ll schedule a follow-up to check healing and possibly do maintenance cleanings every 3–4 months.
- We’ll give you home care tips for brushing, flossing, and mouth rinses to promote healing and prevent reinfection.
- You may be advised to use an antibacterial mouthwash or prescribed antibiotics if infection was present.
- In the weeks that follow, you’ll likely notice your gums becoming healthier, less swollen, and less prone to bleeding.
- Regular maintenance cleanings and excellent home care will be key to keeping gum disease under control.
✅ Don’t Wait Until It Hurts
Gum disease can be silent at first—but if left untreated, it can lead to gum recession, bone loss, and even tooth loss. A deep cleaning is a smart, proactive step to protect your long-term oral health.
At SolSmile Lounge, we’ve helped countless patients in Tampa, Temple Terrace, and New Tampa take back control of their dental health through comfortable, effective periodontal care.
