What to Expect After a Dental Filling (And How to Make Healing Easier)

This is a subtitle for your new post

You Got a Filling—Now What?

Dental fillings are one of the most common treatments we perform at SolSmile Lounge, and for good reason—they stop cavities in their tracks and protect your tooth from further damage.

But what happens after the appointment?

Whether it’s your first filling or your fifth, here’s everything you need to know about post-filling care—so you can feel comfortable, heal quickly, and protect your smile.

1. You Might Feel Numb for a Few Hours

If local anesthesia was used during your procedure, it may take a few hours for the numbness to fully wear off. During this time:

✅ Avoid chewing on the numb side
✅ Don’t drink anything too hot (you may not feel burns)
✅ Be careful not to accidentally bite your lip or cheek

2. Sensitivity Is Normal (But Should Improve Quickly)

Some mild sensitivity to temperature, pressure, or sweet foods is normal for a few days after a filling—especially with metal (amalgam) fillings or if the cavity was deep.

Tips to ease discomfort:

  • Use a sensitivity toothpaste like Sensodyne
  • Avoid very hot, cold, or sticky foods for 24–48 hours
  • Chew on the opposite side if needed

If sensitivity worsens or lasts more than a week, give us a call.

3. Watch for Biting or Pressure Issues

Sometimes, a filling may feel slightly too high after the numbness wears off. If your bite feels “off” or you notice discomfort when chewing, it may need a quick adjustment.

Pro Tip: Don’t wait—an uneven filling can lead to jaw soreness or further tooth damage. Contact us and we’ll get it corrected quickly.

4. Know When to Call the Dentist

Contact SolSmile Lounge if you experience:

  • Sharp or increasing pain
  • A cracked or loose filling
  • Continued sensitivity beyond one week
  • Swelling or signs of infection

5. Prevent Future Cavities: Brush, Floss, and Keep Up with Cleanings

Fillings fix cavities—but prevention is key to keeping your smile healthy.
Be sure to:

  • Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste
  • Floss every day
  • Visit us every 6 months for professional cleanings and exams
